We all have mountaintops we want to reach in our walk with the Lord, but we will have to journey through some valleys first. The valley could look like cancer, loss of a loved one, betrayal, relocation, depression, or a lull in ministry, to name a few. Spiritual warfare is real, and it’s in those low times when we’re weary and worn that the devil pounces. No matter how dark it gets, we will have victory in the valley when we trust the Lord to fight for us.
There is a great example of this in 1Samuel 17, with the account of the battle between David and Goliath. I encourage you to read it and refresh your memory of this classic Bible story.
Valleys
The Philistines were on one side of the mountain, and the Israelites were on the other, with a valley in between them.
Goliath was taunting them there, just like the devil does when we travel through valleys. He shouts his lies and spews his hatred. This opposition can cause us to recoil in fear and discouragement. Insecurity and instability can paralyze us in the valley.
It’s incredibly frightening to be unable to see the joy that lies beyond the pain. So we need to be armed for battle, alert to how our nemesis operates, and ask the Lord to enlighten our darkness.
1Peter 5:8 KJV ~ Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
Prayer for victory in the valley: Lord, help me to hear the sweetness of your still, small voice, over the relentless roars of the enemy. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ my victorious King, I pray, Amen! Share on X
3 Things to Remember in Spiritual Warfare
- Remember who God is: In order to have victory in the valley, we have to remember that we serve the Living God! (Jeremiah 10:10) He is Mighty (Deuteronomy 7:21), Sovereign (Psalm 103:19), Redeemer (Isaiah 44:6), and Deliverer (Psalm 18:2).
- Remember what God said: He will never leave you or forsake you (Hebrews 13:5), he is on your side (Psalm 118:6); he loves you (Psalm 91:14), and he will walk with you through any valley you face (Psalm 23).
- Remember what God has done: How many times has the Lord proven himself faithful? How has he protected and provided for you before? How many prayers has he answered? Write the answers down and refer to them often. Counsel your heart with truth and walk in victory in the valley.
A verse for victory in the valley
I think David must have been thinking of Exodus 14:14 as he was going to fight Goliath. It’s one of my favorite verses for spiritual warfare- The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.
This giant was cursing him and threatening to feed his flesh to the animals. No one else was brave enough to step foot on that battlefield except for David, a little shepherd boy. He wasn’t trained for battle, but David was loyal to the Lord, passionate for his glory, and he was confident in his word.
Confidence in Spiritual Warfare
David’s confidence to defeat this foe was not in himself or his own abilities. He trusted Jehovah Sabaoth- the Lord of hosts. His courage came from knowing the God he served. He responds to Goliath’s harassment by saying:
“I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcasses of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD’S, and he will give you into our hands.”
David defeated the giant just as he said he would. The Lord was fighting for him, and he’s fighting for us too.
The next time you find yourself in between mountaintops, be like David. Trust the Lord to bring you through it. He is able to give you victory in the valley of spiritual warfare!
Psalm 46:11 KJV ~The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
