What Does the Bible Say About Being Saved?

The word of God must be your source of truth and the absolute authority on every subject in life, including how to become a Christian. Here are some scriptures that speak of salvation, and how to be saved from your sins.

Bible Verses About Being Saved (KJV)

  • John 10:9 KJV – I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.
  • Acts 2:21 KJV – And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
  • Acts 4:12 KJV – Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
  • Acts 16:30-31 KJV – And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
  • Romans 5:9-10 KJV – Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
  • Romans 10:9, 13 KJV – That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. … For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
  • Ephesians 2:5, 8 KJV – Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) … For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
  • 1 Timothy 2:4 KJV – Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
  • 2 Timothy 1:9 KJV – Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,
  • Titus 3:5 KJV – Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

More Bible Verses About Salvation (KJV)

  • Romans 1:16 KJV – For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
  • Romans 10:10 KJV – For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
  • 2 Corinthians 7:10 KJV – For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
  • Ephesians 1:13 KJV – In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:9 KJV – For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,
  • 2 Thessalonians 2:13 KJV – But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:
  • 2 Timothy 3:15 KJV – And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
  • Titus 2:11 KJV – For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
  • Hebrews 5:9 KJV – And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

Common Misconceptions About How to Be Saved

Some people take the Bible out of context to get their ideas about how to be saved. Others just believe what someone else tells them or what they see in movies or on social media.

Here are some common misconceptions about how to have eternal life:

  • Baptism.
  • Communion.
  • Church attendance.
  • Having a Christian family.
  • Say a “repeat-after-me”-prayer.
  • Do good works.
  • Be a morally good person.
  • Take confirmation classes.
  • Discipleship.

I can tell you with full assurance that taking these actions does not secure your salvation. If you are trusting in anything other than Jesus and His finished work on the cross and His glorious resurrection to save your soul from Hell, then the devil has succeeded in deceiving you and blinding you to the truth of the gospel.

How to Be “Saved” and Become a Christian:

A Christian is someone who has been born again. They are a follower of Jesus, literally a “little Christ”. No one is born a Christian. And no one becomes a believer without hearing the true gospel, believing it with a broken heart over their sin and separation from God, and confessing that Jesus Christ is Lord. (Romans 10:9-17)

This requires a pure gospel presentation from the word of God.

What is the Gospel?

The gospel is the good news that Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and rose again three days later.

1 Corinthians 15:1-4

The Romans Road is a great tool to explain why we need a Savior and our response to the gospel message.

  • Romans 3:23 KJV – For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
  • Romans 5:8 KJV – But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
  • Romans 6:23 KJV – For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
  • Romans 10:9-10 KJV – That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

What is Saving Faith?

This acronym for faith helps us to understand what genuine saving faith is, so we have an authentic conversion experience.

Facts: You acknowledge the facts of the gospel. (Head knowledge.)

  •   John 3:16
  •   1 Corinthians 15:1-4
  •   Ephesians 2:8-9
  •   John 3:3
  •   John 1:12
  •   2 Corinthians 5:21

Acceptance: You agree that the facts of the gospel are true, but the knowledge hasn’t made it from your head to your heart yet.

Internalize: You make it personal. Your eyes are opened to your sinfulness and need for a Savior. You realize your sin put Jesus on that cross, and He died for you and because of you.

Trust: You believe that Jesus died on the cross, and rose from the dead, and you confess Him as Lord of your life. You trust Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior and commit your heart and life to Him.

Hope: Once the gospel moves from your head to your heart, you have hope for your future in Heaven with God. God gives you a new heart, mind, life, purpose, and family. The weight of sin is lifted from your shoulders and peace, love, joy, and hope fill your heart.

Conviction + Confession = Conversion

Faith that moves from the head to the heart, because of the truth of the word of God and the conviction of the Holy Spirit, is saving faith. If you’ve experienced this brokenness and repentance over your sin, confessed with your mouth, and believed in your heart that Jesus is Lord and that God raised Him from the dead, then the Bible says you are born again.

That’s what it means to be saved. A Christian is a born-again believer in the Lord Jesus Christ who trusts Him alone for salvation, and not in their merit or works.

If you haven’t yet trusted in Christ for eternal life, would you do that now?
