Experiencing the Extraordinary: Intentionally investing in my kids

It was an ordinary summer day, a day like any other. I was writing in my office and could hear the bickering of two of my boys downstairs.  One being a pre-teen and one a full-blown teenager, they were often arguing. (I blame testosterone.)

Irritated and impatient, I started to send them a text to be quiet because they were disturbing my work. (Not my best mom moment.) But the Holy Spirit prompted me to call them upstairs instead.  That decision was one of the best I have ever made.

The older of the two boys is a Christian and knew better than to be acting that way.  So he needed a reprimand and to spend some time with Jesus.  The younger was not born-again and was simply behaving as sinners do. This one needed to hear the gospel again and be brought to a point of decision.

Intentionally Investing the Gospel in My Kids

We had shared the gospel with my son for several years, at every opportunity, in various ways.  He knew it and could even share it, but to him, the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ was simply head knowledge.  At times there was conviction of sin and he was convinced he needed a Savior, but he never chose to forsake all and follow Christ.

Until that day.

Exactly one year ago today, the head knowledge made its way to his broken heart.  An ordinary day became extraordinary as my youngest son bowed his knee to Jesus Christ as Lord.  He professed his faith in Him and begged for forgiveness of his sins.  He asked the Lord to make him a new creature and give him new life in Christ.

My youngest son was broken over his sin and separation from God, and I wept right along with him as he fervently prayed.  It was a privilege to be by his side as his soul was sealed with the Holy Spirit, and his name was written in the Lamb’s book of Life.

It was an incredible and unforgettable moment!

Be Sensitive to the Spirit’s Leading

This ordinary turned extraordinary moment began with my decision to pause and intentionally invest in my boys. I don’t always get it right, but this time, I addressed the issue through the power of the Holy Spirit instead of yelling, texting, or ignoring them. God used me to deliver the life-changing message of the gospel at just the right time, when my son’s heart was ready to receive it.

I share all this to encourage you to be sensitive to the Spirit’s leading in your life.  Be intentional to invest truth into your kids- young or old, saved or not, and others you encounter.  No matter what age or stage of life you may be in, there are people surrounding you who need to hear the gospel. Be a conduit of God’s goodness and grace for His glory.

Welcome the interruptions, and endure the inconveniences. Take the time to deliver the truth.

You never know when God will turn ordinary moments into extraordinary ones with eternal significance! Share on X
