How to Have a Sober Mind Daily

I used to be diligent about memorizing scripture, applying it, and being sober-minded, but somewhere along the way, I started letting the lies from the devil have space they don’t deserve. This, along with difficult circumstances, drama, and declining health, sent me on a spiral down into a deep dark pit of depression a couple of months ago.
By God’s amazing power and grace, I’m out of it now, with a renewed zest for life and zeal for the Lord. But I don’t ever want to be back there, so I’m identifying the triggers, the lies I believed, and the habits I had that led me here.
I’m retraining my brain, being more intentional about spiritual disciplines, and tending to my physical health, so I can be my best self, have a sober mind daily, and avoid those awful pits.
If you’ve ever battled depression, addiction, insecurity, or anxiety, then you’ve struggled to be sober-minded and Spirit-filled, like I have. I know how hard it is to be in your right mind when everything around you is going wrong. But it’s not impossible, or God wouldn’t have given us the instructions to renew our minds and be sober. (Rom. 12:2, Eph. 4:23, Titus 2:4, 1Pet. 5:8)
He doesn’t tell us to do something that He doesn’t equip us and enable us to do. So how do we have a sober mind daily? First, let’s talk about what it means to have a sober mind.

What is a Sober Mind?

1 Peter 5:8 KJV – Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

The word ‘sober’ in the Bible, means safe, sound in mind, self-controlled, moderate as to opinion or passion, and temperate. A sober mind is the renewed mind, spoken of in Romans 12:2, that transforms us into the likeness of Christ.

A sober-minded woman is in control of her thoughts, emotions, and actions. She is circumspect, aware, and alert to the enemy. But an unsober woman is foolish, lost in the fog of her feelings, and trapped by the tactics of the Foe.

Being sober-minded is learning how to renew your mind so that you can be emotionally stable and spiritually strong. It’s a moment-by-moment, day-by-day biblical mindset.

Becoming a sober-minded disciple of Christ doesn’t happen overnight. It takes practice to change your mindset, and then to maintain that renewed mind.
How to Have a Sober Mind Daily

A sober mind strengthens us for spiritual warfare and helps us to be Spirit-filled and shine brightly for Christ. We get that sober-mindedness by casting down imaginations (2 Cor. 10:5) and thinking on what is true (Phil. 4:8).

This is how to do that in 6 simple steps when situations arise where you’re tempted to react in the flesh instead of responding in the Spirit:

6 Steps to a Sober Mind

  1. Take a time-out.
  2. Take every thought captive.
  3. Take it to the word.
  4. Tap out of the fight.
  5. Tap into the force.
  6. Talk it out with God.

I expounded on those steps extensively in this article: 6 Steps to a Sober Mind and How to be Sober-Minded in Stressful Times. There are more links to other posts I’ve written about being a sober-minded woman below.

Daily Declarations for a Sober-Minded Disciple of Christ

By cultivating a sober mind daily, you build your faith, guard your heart, and grow in wisdom, confidence, and boldness.

Having a sober mind also prevents you from making wrong assumptions, believing false doctrines, and following the wicked ways of this world. It allows you to be godly and glorify God with your life.

These statements from the scripture will help you stay rooted and grounded in truth and find your identity and security in Christ alone. They are declarations that will renew your mind, so you want to see them, say them, and shout them if you have to in order to reframe your thinking.

Prayer for a Sober Mind Daily

Righteous Father, thank you for your goodness and grace. I am so thankful for your love and tender care towards me. I pray that you would keep me mindful of my blessings instead of focusing on my burdens. I give those problems and people to you, Lord, and ask that your will would be done. Help me to remember these daily declarations so I can walk in the light, walk in wisdom, and walk with Jesus. Help me to cast down the imaginations, the lies, and anything else that is not of you, and replace those things with truth. Help me to be disciplined over my flesh, diligent to seek you, and determined to have a sober mind daily. I ask all this in the mighty and matchless name of Christ, my King. Amen.

Tend to Your Overall Wellness to Be in Your Right Mind

To have a sober mind daily, you have to get in the word to know the truth, believe it, memorize it and apply it. You have to take the steps necessary to abide in Christ so you can be fruitful and faithful.

That may mean you have to cut down on social media and entertainment in order to invest in your spiritual growth. You might need to say no to certain shows to keep your mind pure. Or maybe there are relationships or activities that are clouding your vision and keeping you from reaching your full potential in Christ.

Remember, your mental, physical, and spiritual health are all tied together. If one is off, the others will be as well. So make sure you tend to your overall well-being!

    1. Yes! Reminding ourselves what is true about God helps us detach from the situation and see it for what it really is, and rest in His ability to work all things together for good. 🧡
