Memorizing Scripture from A to Z

One of the most important things a disciple of Christ must do is memorize Scripture.  For some, that’s an arduous task, and for others, it’s a breeze.  Whether it comes easy to you or not, every Bible verse you memorize is a deposit into your spiritual storehouse for future use. Memorizing scripture is vital for a sober-mind, because you can’t stand on truth, or counter lies with truth, if you don’t know the truth.

While I love the whole of Scripture, there are certain verses that have helped me tremendously in my walk with the Lord, and will bless you as well!  There’s one for every letter of the alphabet, with the exception of “X”, because I prefer the KJV Bible, and there’s not a single verse that begins with that letter in the King James Version.

Verses for A – G

A ~ All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. 2Timothy 3:16

B ~ Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?  Jeremiah 32:27

C ~ Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Matthew 11:28

D ~ Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.  Psalm 37:4

E ~ Every word of God is pure, he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.  Proverbs 30:5

F ~ For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.  Hebrews 4:12

G ~ Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.  Psalm 145:3

Verses for H – M

H ~ Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God: for unto thee will I pray.  Psalm 5:2

I ~ I will love thee, O LORD, my strength.  Psalm 18:1

J ~ Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.  John 14:6

K ~ Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.  Proverbs 4:23

L ~ Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.  Psalm 19:14

M ~ My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise.  Psalm 57:7

Verses for N – R

N ~ Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.  Ephesians 3:20

O ~ Only fear the LORD, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you.  1Samuel 12:24

P ~ Preach the word: be instant in season, out of season: reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.  2Timothy 4:2

Q ~ Quench not the Spirit. 1Thessalonians 5:19

R ~ Rejoice in the Lord always and again I say rejoice.  Philippians 4:4

Verses for S – Z

S ~ Submit yourselves therefore to God.  Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.  James 4:7

T ~ Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.  Proverbs 3:5

U ~ Unto thee O LORD, do I lift up my soul.  Psalm 25:1

V ~ Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death to life.  John 5:24

W ~ Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.  Colossians 4:5

X ~ None in the KJV

Y ~ Yea, doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ.  Philippians 3:8

Z ~ Zadok therefore and Abiathar carried the ark of God again to Jerusalem: and they tarried there.  2Samuel 15:29

The verse for “Z” was a little hard to find, and not one that I have memorized yet.  It isn’t the typical verse for victory, but it does remind me that these guys had a job to do and they did it faithfully.

Tips for Memorizing Scripture

Since the success of believers is tied to our knowledge of and obedience to God’s Word, the memorizing of portions of the Bible is advisable. ~ Max Anders

Practice makes progress, so if you want to retain scripture, then you have to work at it.  Write verses out on index cards, put them to a beat or familiar tune, and recite them repeatedly. Place the scriptures where you will see them often.  If you have children in the home, work on memorizing them together, and you’ll build up your spiritual storehouse, and theirs!

Memorizing scripture can be summed up with 4 P’s – print, place, practice, and pray!  The Lord is willing and able to help you grow in any area of life, all you have to do is ask him for it.  Pray for the ability to memorize scripture, and do your part and print the verses, place them in high-visibility areas, and practice, practice, practice!

Do you have any tips to share for memorizing scripture?  If so, share them in the comments below, I would love to hear them.

Colossians 3:16~ Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
