Renew Your Mind and Revive Your Heart with ‘It is Written’

It is written. Those three simple words have saved me from the deep dark pit of depression more times than I can count during this stressful season of life. Along with grieving the sudden loss of my brother, I’ve been dealing with drama, discouragement, division, sickness, and a crazy busy schedule. Sometimes it feels like my life is just falling down around me, and I’m barely holding on by a thread.

On a particularly difficult day, the Lord gave me a verse and reminder to be sober-minded, to see the enemy at work, and to stand against the devil’s devices as Jesus did in the wilderness, with ‘it is written’.

This process has helped me so much that I wanted to share it with you as well!

Psalm 107:20-21 KJV – He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions. Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

Renew Your Mind and Revive Your Heart with ‘It is Written’

When life gets chaotic and confusing, the noise of the world, the flesh, and the devil can completely drown out the voice of the Lord. It’s when we don’t see Him at work, hear Him, or feel His presence that we’re in danger of being devoured by the enemy of our souls.

The devil corners us when we’re weary, weak, and worn. He clouds our minds with lies. But the Bible is clear that we are not helpless, hopeless, defenseless, or powerless! Ephesians 6:10-18 tells us to stand against the wiles of the devil, suited in our spiritual armor, holding our shield of faith and wielding that mighty sword of the Spirit – the word of God.

As with anything in life, Jesus is our example to follow for a sober mind in suffering. You can read the account of His time in the wilderness, being tempted by Satan in Luke 4:1-14 and Matthew 4:1-11.

Jesus quoted the scriptures and used the phrase ‘it is written’ to counter everything Satan said.

God used this narrative to prompt me to address every emotion and issue of life with His word. Out loud, I proclaimed every scripture I had in my spiritual storehouse that the Spirit brought to my remembrance.

Reciting ‘it is written’

In the beginning, I felt defeated and depleted, but by the time I was finished reciting verses and ‘it is written’, my spirits were lifted and my hope, joy, and peace returned!

For example, here are 10 declarations from the scriptures that I made:

  1. “It is written, God is on my side and I will not fear what man can to me.” Psalm 118:6
  2. “It is written, God is for me, who can be against me?” Romans 8:31
  3. “It is written, God loves me with an everlasting love and He is enough.” Jeremiah 31:3
  4. “It is written, God is on the throne and His kingdom rules over all.” Psalm 103:19
  5. “It is written, God is great and greatly to be praised and His greatness is unsearchable.” Psalm 145:3
  6. “It is written, God will never leave me or forsake me, so I will be content.” Hebrews 13:5
  7. “It is written, in this world I will have tribulation, but I will be of good cheer because Jesus has overcome the world.” John 16:33
  8. “It is written, this light affliction which is but for a moment, works for me a higher weight of glory.” 2 Corinthians 4:17
  9. “It is written, all power is given unto Jesus and He is always with me.” Matthew 28:18-20
  10. “It is written, the Lord is my Shepherd, and He leads me into rest, restoration, and redemption.” Psalm 23

Discover What is Written to Proclaim ‘It is Written’

Obviously, you can’t proclaim ‘it is written’ if you don’t have any scriptures memorized, so the first step to reviving your heart and renewing your mind is to read your Bible. But don’t just read it to mark devotion time off your to-do list. Be intentional in investing time in studying and memorizing God’s word.

Build your spiritual storehouse for times of trouble and testing. It takes consistent effort, but it is SO worth it! Not only does it help you to know God’s word better, but it also grows your knowledge of God himself, since the Bible is a book all about HIM!

Psalm 119 is a great place to start. It’s all about the blessings and benefits of the word of God in our lives.

Study Psalm 119 to grow your love for the Word

Studying Psalm 119 will give you direction and discernment, and deepen your love for the scriptures and for your Savior.

Some fun facts about this epic psalm:

  • Psalm 119 is the longest Psalm and chapter in the Bible, with 176 verses.
  • It’s an acrostic poem, with each of the 22 stanzas beginning with a letter from the Hebrew alphabet.
  • The author is unknown but believed to be David- a man after God’s own heart.

Here are some ideas for your own declarations of it is written:

  • In times of temptation ~ “It is written, thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” (Psalm 119:11)
  • In times of tribulation ~ “It is written, this is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me.” (Psalm 119:50)
  • In times of triumph ~”It is written, my soul hath kept thy testimonies; and I love them exceedingly.” (Psalm 119:167)
  • In times of terror ~ “It is written, thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word.” (Psalm 119:114)
  • In times of transition ~ “It is written, thou art near, O LORD; and all thy commandments are truth.” (Psalm 119:151)
  • In times of tragedy ~ “It is written, my soul melteth for heaviness: strengthen thou me according unto thy word.” (Psalm 119:28)
  • In times of training ~ “It is written, teach me good judgment and knowledge: for I have believed thy commandments.” (Psalm 119:66)

Regardless of where you start reading, the Lord will speak to you through the pages of scripture. His words will make you sober-minded and Spirit-filled through any issue of life as you believe them and apply them!

Hebrews 4:12 KJV~ For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

  1. I loved this post. I never thought to preface the verses with “it is written” but your article clearly communicates how it can help. I’ll definitely be working at this.

    1. Thanks! It really helped me to regain power over my thoughts and get my emotions under control. It changed my perspective and brought the Lord front and center in my situation. Hopefully I can remember to do that every time I’m overwhelmed!

  2. Psalm 119:68 has been my anthem for the past year and a half! “You are good and you do good.” No.Matter.What. I love the phrase “base your life on what is written”. I might need to have signs made for my kids’ rooms with that on it. So good!
