Titus 2:3-5 gives the call to invest in biblical discipleship for women. This passage also outlines the character that women should have and the content that they should share. It’s an invitation to women to be actively involved in the mission of God.
Women have the privilege of participating in the spiritual transformation process of other women with these verses. They experience the joy of investing sound doctrine and watching God work miracles.
Discipleship is life-changing and results in spiritual growth for both women. Its effects reach the home, workplace, the church, and the lost world.
Titus 2:3-5 KJV – The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
Biblical Discipleship For Women
Even though it’s wonderful, it’s not enough for the pastor to teach sound doctrine from the pulpit. Because if it were, we wouldn’t have these instructions in Titus 2. God knows that women need other women to teach them how to be godly and bring him glory.
We need the living example, and we need accountability, counseling, fellowship, and instruction that come with biblical discipleship.
God’s design is for an aged woman to teach the younger women in the church about biblical womanhood. Just like in our culture today, women back then were clueless about their roles and responsibilities. Through discipleship, spiritually mature women take others under their wing and teach them what it means to be godly, wise women.
This woman should have the character and conduct of a virtuous woman. As a spiritual mentor, she must know God’s word and have a testimony of faithfulness. For more on the qualities of a spiritual mentor, read my post 9 Characteristics of a Teacher of Good Things.
7 Ways to Invest in Your Own Spiritual Growth
To produce quality disciples who love the Lord and walk in His ways, we have to be that kind of woman ourselves. Before we invest in the spiritual maturity of another, we must invest in our own. Here are 7 ways to invest in your spiritual growth:
- Read and study the Bible.
- Pray.
- Listen to sermons.
- Attend church regularly.
- Have fellowship with mature believers.
- Participate in ministry.
- Listen to wise counsel.
To pursue spiritual maturity in this way, we’ll have to make some choices. It won’t always be easy. But to grow in godliness so we can be an example to other women, we need to be:
- Disciplined over our flesh.
- Diligent to prioritize our time.
- Determined to choose to invest in the spiritual rather than the physical.
- Discerning what is the best use of our time, talent, and treasures.
What keeps us from investing in our spiritual growth?
- Distracted by worldly pursuits.
- Daunted by daily plans.
- Defeated by guilty pleasures.
Don’t you know that’s exactly where the enemy wants to keep us? Because when we are lost in the fog of our flesh, or deafened by the noise of this world, we’re ineffective for the kingdom!
Romans 13:14 KJV – But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.
Get Involved in Biblical Discipleship for Women
Teaching the younger women good things was not an option for these mature women, it was expected. It was their role within the body of Christ to help establish sound doctrine in the church. This was how they contributed to making the body of Christ stand out above the wickedness and perversion of the world around them.
As believers, we are responsible for bringing God glory through the teaching of His word to other women in life-on-life discipleship. Biblical discipleship among women is effective. Women teaching women works if we do it well.
Take stock of your life right now. Do you have the character of the aged woman in Titus 2:3? Then find someone to invest in!
If you’re in the younger woman stage, find a mature woman to invest the Bible in you. Pray for God to send you a ministry-minded, mission-focused, virtuous woman to help you to grow in faith, character, and ministry, for God’s glory.
2Timothy 2:2 KJV – And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

Wow, you are one incredible women. Truly being the hands of feet for Christ. Being willing and able to write your own Womens Bible Study takes a lot of hard work, time, and commitment. I can’t wait to hear more. I absolutely LOVE the scripture you used to base your study on. I’ve done a lot of studying of the Proverbs 31 wife, but this scripture in Titus is just as strong and would be great to study as well.
All glory to God alone! He gives me the goods and I’m just a vessel. From the time someone started investing truth in me and lived it out in front of me, I had that deep desire to be that godly woman who invests in others. She is a model of spiritual maturity and I hope to be the same! You’re absolutely right, it does take a lot of work to write a bible study! But it’s so worth it! Blessings to ya! 🙂
I really enjoyed this! Especially the lists of ways to invest in your spiritual growth. As we approach a new year, I’m finding myself evaluating my spiritual discipline and this was a helpful read!
Praise the Lord, I’m glad it was a blessing to ya! 🙂
I can relate with at times being “daunted by daily plans” and mentoring can seem like another item to put on the “to do” list. Yet it is so important! I remember when I came to know Jesus at age 30, I had mentors and I am so thankful for them to help me grow and answer my questions.
Me too! 🙂
What a wonderful ministry!
It is! 🙂
Love this!! As someone who’s a “teenage Christian” (beyond the baby Christian phase but still in a period of a lot of growth), I’m blessed to have someone disciple me and to be a part of a bible study, but I’m hoping to someday be able to pass that on to someone else. I love your tips for reading the bible as well as your emphasis on why discipling is so important.
