In Titus 2:5 we are told that the older women are to teach the younger women to be “good”, but that’s rather subjective, isn’t it? Your description of a good person will vary from mine based on your religious beliefs, moral compass, and cultural influences. So we must make what the Bible says is good be our baseline for teaching the young women to be good.
Instructing her to be good begins with teaching her that she is not good in and of herself. The Bible is clear that we are all born sinners, and that none of us is good no matter what good things we may do. (Romans 3:9-23)
Even the charitable and noble things we do are sometimes for the wrong motives to gain approval or seek praise, to elevate ourselves and not for God’s glory.
Teaching the young women to be good:
- God is good
- The gospel is good
- The Spirit is good
- A sober mind is good
- Serving the Lord is good
- Discipleship is good
God is Good
There are several scriptures that tell us that God is good, and that everything he does is good. So to teach young women to be good, we must teach them to be more like God. For example, if I want to be a good mom, I need to parent like God does. This means I need to love my children by setting boundaries and disciplining them when they disobey. But that also means I must give grace and be compassionate and merciful with them.
~Psalm 119:68~ Thou art good, and doest good; teach me thy statutes.
The Gospel is Good
To teach a young woman to be good is to teach her to believe and receive the good news of the gospel. The word gospel means good news.
God, in His goodness, gave up his beloved Son so undeserving sinners could be forgiven and free. (1 Corinthians 15:1-4, Romans 5:8, Romans 10:8-13)
At the moment she believes the gospel and receives Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior, God begins a good work in her.
~Philippians 1:6~ Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.
The Spirit is Good
The Holy Spirit is a good gift we receive at salvation, and Galatians 5:22 says that goodness is a fruit of the Spirit of God that dwells in believers. In order to see that goodness in our lives, we have to walk in the Spirit and not yield to our flesh. This is something that does not come naturally, and must be taught in discipleship.
Teaching younger women how to walk in the Spirit means teaching them how to read and study their Bible, how to pray and praise the Lord, and the importance of fellowship with other believers.
To be a good woman we must surrender to God’s word, His will, and His ways, because they are best. It’s hard to give up our rights, but if we truly believe that God is good then we must trust that his will is also good and good for us.
Psalm 84:11~ For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.
We have to ask ourselves if we want to be right, or retain our rights, or do we want to be righteous? Share on XA Sober Mind is Good
In order to surrender to God’s will above our own, we have to be sober-minded. A sober mind filters everything through the truth of the scriptures. It helps us to make Spirit-led decisions and respond to stressful situations with humility and grace instead of freaking out.
A sober mind is vital to our spiritual growth and overall wellbeing. It is the first thing that an aged woman is to teach a young woman in Titus 2:4.
Titus 2:3-5~ The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
Teaching the young women to be good is to teach her how to saturate her mind with scriptural truth and be sober.
Serving the Lord is Good
Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:16 to Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Our good works, done with the right motives, glorifies God. So we need to teach the younger women how to serve the Lord. This is where we can teach by example, like Jesus did with his disciples, and take them with us on ministry opportunities.
~Titus 3:14~ And let ours also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful.
Discipleship is Good
When we obey God and disciple other women the Titus 2 way, we get a front-row seat as they mature in Christ, and it is such a blessing.
When our disciples begin to invest in other women we begin to see some of the fruit of our labor. Disciples making disciples who make disciples… that is very good. So let’s teach the younger women to be saved, Spirit-filled, sober-minded, and to serve the Lord. If we fail to invest in the next generation, who will, and where will our good and godly women be?
