The Secret to Living the Abundant Life

Does your life feel mundane? Do you find yourself thinking that there has got to be more to life than this? Are you restless and ready to change things up? Those are tell-tale signs that you’re not living the abundant life that Jesus spoke of in John 10:10.

I’ve been there, and I’ve learned that there is a secret to living the abundant life. I’ll share it with you, but first, let’s answer the question “What is the abundant life?

John 10:10 KJV ~ The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

What is The Abundant Life?

Abundantly means that it is beyond regular life, it’s superior, more remarkable, more excellent, an extraordinary life. As the late Billy Graham described it, the abundant life is “Life with a capital L!”

Yet so often, believers’ lives are mediocre and monotonous. They settle for common, ordinary, boring lives, or they just blend in with the rest of the world.

The abundant life that Jesus provides is a life of freedom, fulfillment, and fruitfulness that is overflowing with love, joy, and peace. Yet how many of us can honestly say that we are living the abundant life?

I think many of us would say we’re living a busy life or a hectic life. Some would say life is good, comfortable, no complaints. And others would say that life is disappointing and depressing, and they’re feeling defeated.

Sister, Jesus came to give us a life teeming with blessings, rich in grace and mercy! Why are we settling for less than God’s best for us?

What the Abundant Life is Not

These days, when you hear preaching about John 10:10 about the abundant life that Jesus brought, it’s usually about good health, financial wealth, and living your best life here on earth.

In our natural minds, we have reduced this bountiful Jesus life to the things we think matter most, like riches, material possessions, and social status. But Jesus didn’t promise a pain-free existence, with paradise on earth. He promised to return for his brothers and sisters to take them to their eternal home in heaven, where they will blissfully enjoy Eden restored.

Until that day, we live in a fallen world where sin abounds. Having an abundant life isn’t about getting the best of what this wicked world offers, but experiencing supernatural peace, hope, joy, and love, despite our difficult circumstances.

John 16:33 KJV ~ These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

How to Have the Abundant Life

The secret to living the abundant life isn’t giving more of your money to tv preachers or thinking positive thoughts, or willing things into existence. It’s not about you at all.

Jesus said abundant life is in Him. So the more time we spend with Jesus, in the word, and in prayer, the fuller our lives become.

Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6), and in Him is life and light (John 1:4). He gave us eternal life, access to God, peace with God, and the peace of God.

Jesus is our stability in an unstable world. He never changes and he is better than even the very best man on earth. No one and nothing compares to Him. Therefore, the secret to living the abundant life is abiding in Christ. (Read John 15)

John 15:11 KJV ~ These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

Prayer for Living the Abundant Life

If you’re not living the abundant life right now, change is one prayer away. It’s as simple as asking for more of Jesus and less of you. Here is a sample prayer for abundant living:

Heavenly Father, you are great and greatly to be praised, and your greatness is unsearchable. I want to experience more of your goodness and exhibit more godliness. Forgive me for settling for less than your best for me. Help me to abide in Christ today and live the abundant life he offers, a life overflowing with joy, love, hope, and peace. I ask for the Spirit to rule my heart and mind, and guide my choices so that I may bring you the glory you deserve. In the mighty and matchless name of Christ, my King, I pray, Amen.

Our purpose is to glorify God, and the first step toward fulfilling that mission is to surrender our lives to the Lord Jesus Christ. When we do that, our lives instantly become superior to what they were before Jesus.

His peace is unexplainable, His presence is undeniable, His love is unbelievable, and His joy is unstoppable. Abiding in Christ, growing in grace, and the knowledge of the Lord is where the unfulfilling and unpleasant life becomes successful and satisfied.

In closing, I encourage you to refuse to settle for less than God’s best for you.

Rest in His love, rely on His Spirit, remain in His presence, and remember His promises.

You may not get a fat bank account or that giant house you want, but you will receive more of Jesus, which is a biblical abundant life.
