If you’re searching for Bible verses for courage, it’s likely you’re struggling to take that first step of faith onto a new path God has put before you. When we enter into unfamiliar territory, it’s natural for fear of the unknown, fear of failure, and fear of judgment to overtake us. We can be so afraid of making a mistake, that we don’t do anything at all.
You know, that’s exactly where the enemy wants to keep us. Immobilized, insecure, inactive…
But if God brought us to something new, we can trust Him to see us through it. We have to be confident in the character and care of the Almighty. He is good and He loves us. Anything He brings about in our lives stems from that source of pure goodness and amazing adoration. Every child of His is an absolute treasure to Him!
“God is too good to be unkind and He is too wise to be mistaken. And when we cannot trace His hand, we must trust His heart.” ~ Charles Spurgeon
Bible Verses for Courage from the KJV
The word ‘courage’ appears 20 times in the KJV, all in the Old Testament, with the exception of one verse. Acts 28:15 is the only New Testament mention of courage, and it’s in regard to the apostle Paul’s journey to Rome. The Bible says that Paul found courage because of the brethren he got to visit with on his last stop.
His fellow believers lifted Paul’s spirits and gave him the boldness to share Jesus with the top Jews in Rome. Sometimes fellowship with our brothers and sisters in Christ is just what we need to be brave.
Here are some of my favorite Bible verses for courage:
Deuteronomy 31:6 KJV – Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.
Joshua 1:9 KJV – Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
Joshua 10:25 KJV – And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the LORD do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.
1 Chronicles 19:13 KJV – Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the LORD do that which is good in his sight.
1 Chronicles 28:20 KJV – And David said to Solomon his son, Be strong and of good courage, and do it: fear not, nor be dismayed: for the LORD God, even my God, will be with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the LORD.
Ezra 10:4 KJV – Arise; for this matter belongeth unto thee: we also will be with thee: be of good courage, and do it.
Psalm 27:14 KJV – Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.
Psalm 31:24 KJV – Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.
Isaiah 41:6 KJV – They helped every one his neighbour; and every one said to his brother, Be of good courage.
Bible Verses That Help Me to Be Brave
I have to admit, fear has been one of my biggest sin struggles. Perfectionistic tendencies are deeply embedded in me, so I’m often afraid of being wrong or doing things wrong.
Recently, God brought me a new work endeavor that is completely out of my comfort zone. I’ve never done anything like this before, so it’s intimidating.
To combat the fear, I taped up some scriptures that help me be brave above my desk so I can review them every day and renew my mind. While they don’t specifically mention the word courage, they are verses that remind me of the truth that God is with me, He is for me, and He will work through me.
Romans 8:31-32 KJV – What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
2 Corinthians 10:5 KJV – Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
Ephesians 6:10-11 KJV – Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
Philippians 2:13 KJV – For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
Philippians 4:13 KJV – I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
Colossians 3:23-24 KJV – And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.
2 Timothy 1:7 KJV – For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
Psalm 37:5 KJV – Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.
Proverbs 16:3 KJV – Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.
Proverbs 25:28 KJV – He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.
Proverbs 28:1 KJV – The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.
Psalm 56:3-4 KJV – What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.
Zechariah 4:6 KJV – Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.
Ephesians 3:20 KJV – Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,
2 Chronicles 15:7 KJV – Be ye strong therefore, and let not your hands be weak: for your work shall be rewarded.
Philippians 3:14 KJV – I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
Memorize and Meditate on the Bible Verses for Courage
Let’s face it, new beginnings are scary! There are all kinds of unknowns, and the uncertainty can keep us from going forward on the new path God has placed before us. But when we memorize and meditate on and believe the scriptures we are emboldened to take those leaps of faith.
If you’re struggling with fear, then write out these Bible verses for courage and put them in a place you will see them often. The more you review them and renew your mind, the more confidence you will have to take those faith steps with bravery and boldness.
I’m cheering for you, friend!
