How to Be a Good and Faithful Steward of God

At the end of our lives, the only thing that will matter is what we did with the things God entrusted us with -the gospel, spiritual gifts, and good works for God’s glory. We are stewards of those things. We choose whether we’ll be good and faithful stewards or if we’ll waste the opportunities we have to glorify God.

Will we leave those things undone because we are too fearful to move forward? Will someone stay lost and enter into eternal hellfire because we didn’t share the good news of Jesus with them? Will we be ashamed before Jesus at the Judgment Seat when He asks what we did with what He gave us?

Or will we be good and faithful stewards who hear our Savior say, “Well done!”?

Why Be A Faithful Steward of God?

1 Corinthians 4:1-2 KJV – Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.

There are several reasons why we should prioritize being good and faithful stewards. Here are six of them:

  • Because God deserves our obedience, surrender, and complete devotion.
  • Because we love God.
  • Because we will give an account of our stewardship.
  • Because souls are at stake.
  • Because God deserves the glory.
  • Because God said so.

These six things simply scratch the surface of the heart motivations we should have. Expanding the Kingdom and exalting the King because of our love and loyalty to him must be the driving force of our entire lives.

The purpose of biblical stewardship is the expansion of the Kingdom and exaltation of God. Share on X

Qualities Of A Good Steward

Stewardship is the management of something entrusted to one’s care.  A steward is an overseer, manager, or caretaker for someone or something. Our daily choices determine what kind of steward we will be.

In a previous post, I shared the characteristics a good steward should possess. Here is a snippet from that article, with a list of the qualities we can cultivate to become good and faithful stewards of God.

  1. Good stewards recognize their role and responsibility. They don’t wander, without a sense of purpose. They take their job as a manager of the mission seriously.
  2. Good stewards realize everything belongs to God. They understand that what has been entrusted to them is on loan from the Lord, and hold all things loosely.
  3. Good stewards are trustworthy. They are reliable and responsible.
  4. Good stewards are faithful. They don’t give up but keep going forward by faith.
  5. Good stewards are mindful. They don’t mindlessly scroll social media or eat whatever garbage they want. They don’t waste money on frivolous things or fill their minds with filth from entertainment.
  6. Good stewards are truthful. They aren’t deceptive or dishonest.
  7. Good stewards are diligent. They are persistent and hardworking.
  8. Good stewards are prayerful. They aren’t self-willed but seek the Lord’s guidance and direction in all things.
  9. Good stewards are discerning. They are sensitive to the Spirit’s leading and exercise good judgment.
  10. Good stewards are proactive. They don’t wait until they feel like doing something.

How To Be A Good And Faithful Steward

To be good stewards with those character qualities, we must take our role as a servant of Christ seriously. We have to be diligent and disciplined and not let the devices of the devil distract us from our God-given assignment to expand the Kingdom and exalt our King.

That means we must prioritize spiritual growth, participate in the ministry, put time in with Jesus, pray without ceasing, and purpose in our hearts to live for the pleasure of our King.

Look at the example of Jesus. He didn’t waste time, procrastinate, or pursue worthless endeavors. Jesus was intentional, in tune with the Father, and invested in eternity. We must follow Him, learn from Him, and look to Him for the grace and strength we need to steward well.

Good Stewards Keep Their Minds On ‘That Day’

2 Corinthians 5:10 KJV – For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

If we don’t keep God’s glory and our future experience at the judgment seat of Christ at the forefront of our minds, we won’t be good and faithful stewards. That’s what it means to fix our eyes on Christ. To remember what He went through to save our souls. To see Him on the throne and worthy of our worship and works. To envision hearing His praise for a job well done as we cross the finish line, having run our race and finished our course faithfully.

I don’t know anyone who wants to feel ashamed on judgment day. But that’s exactly what will happen to those believers who waste time on worldly pursuits.

When we put our lives in perspective of that day, when we kneel at the judgment seat of Christ to give an account of our stewardship, and we examine our lives to see if we have anything worthy of our King, will there be anything of eternal value? Or will it all burn up before our very eyes?

Even if we have failed at stewarding well up to this point, we can repent and renew our minds about serving the Lord faithfully. By abiding in Christ and applying His word, focusing on building the Kingdom, and bringing God glory, we can be good stewards of our time, talent, treasure, temple, and the truth today.

Lord, help us become good and faithful stewards of your mysteries and the ministry you entrusted to us, to build the Kingdom and bring you glory!

1 Peter 4:10 KJV – As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

  • 1 Thessalonians 2:4 KJV – But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts.
  • Titus 1:7 KJV – For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;
