How Should a Christian Walk?

There are a couple of places in scripture that relate believers to an athlete running a race, such as Hebrews 12:1 and 1 Corinthians 9:24-26. Those passages remind us to have diligence and discipline and take our ministry of the gospel as seriously as Olympic competitors do. But more often, followers of Christ are told to walk in certain ways. So how should a Christian walk?

The Bible is clear about the lifestyle that those who profess to know Jesus should have. As Christians, which literally means “little Christ,” we represent Jesus. We are His ambassadors, disciples, followers, and ministers of reconciliation. Those titles carry with them a responsibility to bear His resemblance and represent Him well in this wicked world.

The apostles Paul and John teach us in the New Testament how we are to walk as Christians.

Here are 15 ways the Bible says a Christian should walk and 5 things to avoid in your Christian walk.

15 Ways a Christian Should Walk

Whether you’re a seasoned saint or a brand-new believer, there are certain characteristics that should mark your life.

WALK-

  1. In the newness of life. Romans 6:4 KJV – Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
  2. Honestly. Romans 13:13 KJV – Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. 1 Thessalonians 4:12 KJV – That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.
  3. By faith. 2 Corinthians 5:7 KJV – (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
  4. In the Spirit. Galatians 5:16, 25 KJV – This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. … If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
  5. Worthy of our vocation. Ephesians 4:1-2 KJV – I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;
  6. In love. Ephesians 5:2 KJV – And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
  7. As children of light. Ephesians 5:8 KJV – For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
  8. Circumspectly. Ephesians 5:15 KJV – See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,
  9. Worthy of the Lord. Colossians 1:10 KJV – That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;  1 Thessalonians 2:12 KJV – That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.
  10. In Him. Colossians 2:6 KJV – As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:
  11. In Wisdom. Colossians 4:5 KJVWalk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.
  12. As He walked. 1 John 2:6 KJV – He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
  13. In the Light. 1 John 1:7 KJV – But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
  14. After His commandments. 2 John 1:6 KJV – And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.
  15. In truth. 3 John 1:4 KJV – I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.

God clearly has expectations for His people to be holy and live sanctified lives. In order for us to have a Christian walk that pleases the Lord and draws others to Him, believers must learn the Bible and live it out.

Things to Avoid in Your Christian Walk

Walking disorderly, in the flesh, in darkness, as men, and as other Gentiles walk are marks of immaturity and will hinder you from accomplishing the mission God has for you.

  1. Walking disorderly. 2 Thessalonians 3:11 KJV – For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.
  2. Walking in the flesh. 2 Peter 2:10 KJV – But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.
  3. Walking in darkness. 1 John 1:6 KJV – If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
  4. Walking as men (carnally). 1 Corinthians 3:3 KJV – For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?
  5. Walking as other Gentiles walk. Ephesians 4:17 KJV – This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,

The key to walking God’s way is to know, believe, and obey His word. There’s no other way around it. It requires a transformation that can only come about by renewing your mind. Romans 12:1-2

Being sober-minded and Spirit-filled is vital to your sanctification and spiritual growth

Follow Jesus for a Sanctified Christian Walk

If you’re feeling convicted about your Christian walk, I encourage you to repent and surrender to the Spirit’s leading today. Fix your eyes on Jesus, follow Him, and fulfill your purpose as a child of the King. He loves you and He is with you, encouraging you and equipping you every step of the way.

“Only by walking with God can we hope to find the path that leads to life. That is what it means to be a disciple. After all — aren’t we ‘followers of Christ’? Then by all means, let’s actually follow him. Not ideas about him. Not just his principles. Him.” ~ John Eldredge

I designed a tool to help Christian women know Jesus more intimately as they read and study the Bible.

My Jesus Journal focuses your time in the Word on learning more about the Lord and cultivating a closer relationship with Christ.

Intended to be used alongside your daily Bible reading, My Jesus Journal has space to record the date, the scriptures you read, and lined spaces to write your observations about Jesus you saw in the text. The bottom of that page has a verse from the KJV Bible about Jesus. The following page has space to write prayers related to what you discovered in your reading. There are also extra prayer pages in the back of the book.
