2 Tried-and-True Ways to Know Jesus More Intimately

Did you start this year off with a desire to know Jesus more intimately? Do you have a hunger for a deeper relationship with God? Well, you’re in the right place, because in this post, I’ll give you two tried-and-true ways to do just that!

If we want to deepen our relationship with Jesus, then we just have to ask Him to reveal himself to us, and we have to seek His face.

Matthew 7:7-8 KJV – Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

Ask God for a deeper knowledge of Him

Just like any relationship, greater intimacy comes from getting to know each other. For example, the people closest to you know your nature, your experiences, your hopes, and dreams, and fears. They attained that intimate relationship with you by asking questions, hearing you recount stories and divulge secrets.

The same applies to our friendship with Jesus. He wants to be known and will reveal His awesomeness if you just ask Him to.

A prayer to help you cultivate intimacy with Christ

Father in heaven, thank you for rescuing me from sin and death and adopting me as your child. Your grace is amazing, your mercy is unending, your love is unconditional, and your peace is plentiful. I stand in awe of you today. Lord, you know the condition of my heart and the depth of our relationship. You know what I need to learn from you so I can grow in grace. I pray you would draw near to me as I draw near to you, and reveal yourself to me. I want to know you more, Jesus. Come and meet with me now. I love you, and ask all these things in the precious and perfect name of Christ, my King. Amen.

Seek His face if you want to know Jesus more intimately

Jeremiah 29:12-13 KJV – Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

To know Jesus more intimately, we have to seek His face with all of our heart. That means our hearts can’t be hardened by sin, or divided in our allegiances. We have to seek Him diligently, intentionally, and consistently.

Then, and only then, can we truly hear the voice of God and learn from Him. Seeking Him has to be a priority in our lives, and that means we have to make choices that don’t make our flesh happy. But the reward of a deeper knowledge of God and the abundant joy and peace that comes from that relationship is totally worth anything we have to sacrifice.

I recently began a bible study by Nancy Demoss Wolgemuth and Tim Grissom called Seeking Him: Experiencing the Joy of Personal Revival. It is preparing my heart for revival and cultivating intimacy with Christ. It’s amazing, and I highly recommend it for anyone who feels distant or disconnected from Jesus, or who just wants to deepen their friendship with Him!

How to experience a more intimate relationship with Christ

The Seeking Him bible study is helping me to recognize my true spiritual condition, repent, and return to being intentional with my time. Nothing matters more than having a right relationship with Jesus. But it is so easy to let other things creep in and take His place in my heart and life.

How about you? Have you let things like social media, tv, work, school, or other relationships steal your attention and affection? What choices can you make today that will prove out your love and devotion to your Savior?

I’ll give you a hint- put your phone down and pick up a bible! Start reading through the Gospels and writing the attributes, attitude, and actions of Jesus. Record what you see about the person, provision, presence, and power of the Lord. (You can pick up a copy of the journal I designed just for that purpose. The info and link are below!)

As you seek Him in the scriptures, you will find Him and know Jesus more intimately.

James 4:8 KJV – Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

Practical ways to grow in your relationship with Christ

If the desire of your heart is to know Jesus more personally, there are some practical steps you can take.

  • Spend time in the word
  • Talk to Him
  • Listen to sermons
  • Hear the testimonies of other believers
  • Trust Him and walk by faith

When we dig into the pages of scripture with a heart to know God more, He reveals himself. And when we pray and ask Him about His word, will, and ways, He gives us further insight.

Listening to sound doctrine taught by faithful men and women also expands our understanding of Jesus. And when we hear stories of God’s deliverance, faithfulness, healing, and provision, we come to know Him on an even deeper level.

The scriptures truly come to life as we experience for ourselves the goodness and grace of God. When we take faith steps and follow the Spirit’s lead, the Lord walks with us every step of the way and proves himself faithful. That strengthens our faith in Him and gives us a closer relationship with Christ.

Psalm 145:18 KJV – The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.

7 Scriptures on knowing Jesus better

John 17:3 KJV – And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

2 Peter 3:18 KJV – But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

Colossians 1:9-10 KJV – For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;

Philippians 3:7-10 KJV – But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

I designed and published a tool to help Christian women to know Jesus more intimately. My Jesus Journal focuses your time in the word on learning more about the Lord and cultivate a closer relationship with Christ.

Intended to be used alongside your daily Bible reading, My Jesus Journal has space to record the date, the scriptures you read, and lined spaces to write your observations about Jesus you saw in the text. The bottom of that page has a verse from the KJV Bible about Jesus. The next page has space to write prayers related to what you discovered in your reading. There are also extra prayer pages in the back of the book.

Mark 12:30 tells us to love the Lord with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength, but we cannot love someone we do not know. The more time we spend intentionally seeking Jesus in the pages of scripture, the more we will know Him and love Him. My Jesus Journal aids us in our quest to learn and love and know Jesus more deeply.
