Thinking about spiritual stability makes me think of something one of my doctors told me. You see, I have chronic back pain, and they advised me to build a strong core to help relieve some of that pain. That’s because a strong core helps with spinal alignment, reduces muscle strain and injury, and promotes proper posture. It helps with physical stability.
In the same way, a strong spiritual core keeps us aligned with God’s will, walking uprightly, and gives us spiritual stability.
The spiritual core of a Christian is their mind because where the mind goes, the emotions, words, and actions follow. That’s why the Bible tells us to “be renewed in the spirit of our mind” (Eph. 4:23), and to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Rom. 12:2). We need a sober mind for spiritual stability.
What is Spiritual Stability?
Spiritual stability means we are unswayed, steady, and strong in the faith. Those who are mature, rooted and grounded in truth, and faithful to the Lord have spiritual stability.
Doubt, and double-mindedness, reveal spiritual instability and lead to departing from the faith.
Every Christian should be intentional about being sober-minded and having spiritual stability.
1 Corinthians 15:58 KJV ~ Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
3 Prayers for Spiritual Stability
In my post for the Pray With Confidence website, I shared 3 brief prayers that I pray for spiritual stability. They help me be sober-minded, Spirit-filled, and sensitive to the Lord’s leading. Here is one of them:
Heavenly Father, I ask that you would fill me with your Spirit, filter my thoughts and words with your scriptures, and focus me on your glory today. Clear out the distractions, bring your word to my remembrance, and give me your mind on things. I want to bring you glory, Lord, so please cleanse me from sin, and give me a fresh anointing of the Holy Spirit to accomplish your will, and represent you well today.
What I’m asking the Lord for is a sober mind, and He’s always faithful to hear and answer those prayers. For instance, my only daughter just left for her first year of college. We are very close, and I miss her terribly, but the Lord has kept me out of the pit of depression by keeping me sober-minded through prayer and meditating on God’s word.

What Hinders Spiritual Stability?
There are several things that hinder the spiritual stability of a Christian. For example, habitual sin, emotional instability, and unbelief all affect our steadfastness. But when believers exercise sober-mindedness, they walk in the Spirit and eliminate those hindrances.
A sober-minded woman stands firm in her faith and isn’t tossed about by every wind of doctrine. (Eph.4:14, James 1:6) She discerns truth from error and walks in wisdom.
Strong faith and abundant peace are the fruit of a sober mind.
Isaiah 26:3 KJV ~ Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.
How to Have a Sober Mind for Spiritual Stability
To be sober-minded, flood your mind with truth and filter every issue of life through that truth. First, you have to know the Truth, so you have to read your Bible. But it’s not enough just to read it. You must obey it, memorize it, and recite it to be sober.
In a previous post, I gave 6 steps to a sober mind. They are:
Action is Required for Spiritual Stability
A strong physical core requires engaging those muscles, strengthening exercises, and a healthy diet to rid your body of excess weight. In the same way, to have a strong spiritual core, we have to be mindful to engage it, exercise it, and expel lies.
We have to cast down our imaginations (2 Cor. 10:5) and think about things that are true (Phil. 4:8), to be sober. The more we do that, the more mature we are in Christ, and the stronger we will stand against the world, flesh, and devil, and have spiritual stability.
The week leading up to my daughter’s departure, I was really struggling to keep my emotions under control. So I wrote down my feelings, named the lies I was believing, and replaced those with scripture. Doing this brought so much peace and gave me the supernatural strength to endure the big goodbye.
I prayed through it, and the Lord gave me the truth to comfort my aching heart. Verses like Isaiah 26:3, Proverbs 3:5-6, and Philippians 4:4-9 reminded me that God is on the throne and I could trust Him in this time of transition.
Bring God Glory with Your Spiritual Stability
We live in troublesome times, and there is so much opposition to Christianity today. A sober mind is essential for spiritual stability through the trials and temptations we face. Be intentional to be a woman who is ruled by the Spirit and the Scripture, not by emotions or circumstances. The world is watching, and God’s glory is at stake!
Colossians 2:6-7 KJV ~ As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and established in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
