God Isn’t Just Good, God is Great!

Life can be incredibly overwhelming sometimes. There are difficulties, distractions, and discouraging circumstances, but we don’t have to let them get us down. When we feel like we’re drowning in a sea of disappointments, the Bible is our lifeline to keep us from going under. In it, we find a foundational truth to hang on to, that God is good, and not just good, but God is great.

Why is it so vital to know and remember that God is great? Because the devil is working overtime to convince us that God isn’t good, that He doesn’t love us, and that He isn’t trustworthy, therefore we should abandon our loyalty to Him. That’s how he beguiled Eve in the Garden, but we don’t have to fall for the Deceiver’s schemes. We can read the Bible for the truth about God and experience the reality of His awesomeness in our personal relationship with Him.

One scripture that reminds me of what is true about God despite the hardships I face is Psalm 145:3. It may just be my all-time favorite verse. But as a Bible teacher, asking me to pick just one is like asking me to choose which child I love the most. It’s impossible because I cherish them all!

Psalm 145:3 KJV ~ Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable.

God is Great and His Greatness is Unsearchable

I’m sure you’ve heard the saying “God is good all the time, and all the time God is good.” It’s a catchy phrase, and it is true, but according to the Bible, God’s not just good, He’s great!

We define greatness as:

  • Notably large
  • Remarkable in magnitude, degree, or effectiveness
  • Preeminent
  • Markedly superior
  • Outstandingly skillful

Telling someone that God is great communicates He is ENORMOUS, EXTRAORDINARY, MAGNIFICENT, AND MATCHLESS.

There is none like Him! (1Sam. 2:2, 2Sam. 7:22, 1Chron.17:20, Ps. 86:8, Isa. 46:9, Jer. 10:6-7)

Whether I’m feeling anxious about my children’s choices, depressed because of my chronic pain and illness, or burnt out by ministry, I can remind myself that God is great, which encourages me that He is well able to work all things out for my good and His glory. Meditating on His attributes gives me help and hope in trying times.

Deuteronomy 3:24 KJV – O Lord GOD, thou hast begun to shew thy servant thy greatness, and thy mighty hand: for what God is there in heaven or in earth, that can do according to thy works, and according to thy might?

God is Great at Being God

I love Psalm 145:3 so much because it reminds me of the power, provision, and presence of God that trumps every problem in my life. No matter what comes my way, I can stand on what is true about God- that He is great and He is great at being God.

The world around me may seem out of control, but I know God has not abdicated His throne. Nothing is beyond His sight or out of His reach. He is ruling and reigning, and all things are going according to His divine plan. I just have to trust Him.

And you know what? He hasn’t failed me yet!

Psalm 86:10 KJV ~ For thou art great, and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone.

God is great

Bible Verses That Say God is Great (KJV)

Psalm 145:3 isn’t the only scripture that reveals the greatness of God. Here are a few more Bible verses in the KJV that tell us that God is great.

Deuteronomy 10:17 KJV – For the LORD your God [is] God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward:

2 Samuel 7:22 KJV – Wherefore thou art great, O LORD God: for [there is] none like thee, neither [is there any] God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

2 Chronicles 2:5 KJV – And the house which I build [is] great: for great [is] our God above all gods.

Psalm 48:1 KJV – Great [is] the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, [in] the mountain of his holiness.

Psalm 77:13 KJV – Thy way, O God, [is] in the sanctuary: who [is so] great a God as [our] God?

Jeremiah 32:17-19 KJV – Ah Lord GOD! Behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, [and] there is nothing too hard for thee: Thou shewest lovingkindness unto thousands, and recompensest the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them: the Great, the Mighty God, the LORD of hosts, [is] his name, Great in counsel, and mighty in work: for thine eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men: to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings:

Psalm 95:3 KJV – For the LORD [is] a great God, and a great King above all gods.

Share How Great God Is!

God is simply indescribable. Yet, those of us who know the true nature of God must attempt to paint the picture of our Creator because society has a severely skewed image of Him. The devil has drawn billions away from what is true about God and His character and care for His creation. It’s up to us as believers to hold forth the word of life and proclaim the truth that sets captives free.

God is great, and greatly to be praised, and His greatness is unsearchable. The gospel showcases the greatness of God. His love is great, His mercy is great, His compassion is great, and His plan of redemption is great. Every single thing about God is great.

He deserves our complete devotion, and we prove our love for Him by our obedience to His word. (John 14:15) Jesus tells us, like He did the man He delivered a legion of demons from, to go and tell of the great things God had done for him. (Mark 5:19-20)

We reveal His majesty by sharing the gospel and our testimonies of how Jesus has transformed our lives. So let’s invite someone into the intimate knowledge of Christ so they can experience His excellence for themselves.

Prayer to Recognize the Greatness of God

If you’re feeling crushed by your circumstances and having a hard time believing that God is good, let alone great, pray this prayer with me:

Father God, your word says that you are faithful and true, preeminent and powerful, and you love me, but my circumstances seem to say the opposite. Open my eyes to see your goodness while I’m grieving, your hand when I’m sinking, your provision for my problems. Help me know you are near and witness your grace and great glory in my life. Give me strong faith and a sober mind to withstand the wiles of the devil. Bring your word to my remembrance when I begin to listen to his lies. Keep me from falling away from the faith. In the mighty and matchless name of Christ, my King, I pray, Amen.

Prayer redirects our burdens from our hearts to God’s hands. Along with memorizing and meditating on the Bible, it helps us to be sober-minded during the storms of life.
