How to Fix Your Eyes On Jesus

Matthew 14: 22-33 gives us an illustration of why you should fix your eyes on Jesus. It’s the story of when Jesus walked on the water to the disciples in the boat, and Peter asked to walk out there too. After Jesus bids him “Come,” Peter enjoys a divine experience as his feet skimmed the surface of the waves on his way to Jesus.

Can you imagine his awe and wonder at this unbelievable adventure? What a privilege! I’m sure the other disciples would have walked on water too if they just would’ve asked Jesus, but they didn’t. Peter was the only one who had the audacity to ask for something so outrageous and impossible. That makes me wonder how many miraculous opportunities we miss simply because we don’t ask God for them.

Peter’s elation quickly turned to panic as he saw the wind roaring, stirring up waves around him, and he started sinking. Why? Because he no longer had his eyes fixed on Jesus. Peter then cries out to Jesus, with the shortest prayer found in the Bible, “Lord, save me“.

Jesus immediately gives Peter a hand, rescues him, and reveals the reason Peter could no longer do the miraculous. He says, “O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?” Doubt is an indicator that, like Peter, we’re no longer looking to the Lord, trusting His divinity, aware of His ability.

In other words, fixing your eyes on Jesus is synonymous with trusting Him.

“If we only spent more of our time in looking at Christ we should soon forget ourselves.” ~ D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones

How to Fix Your Eyes on Jesus

Fixing your eyes on Jesus is turning your attention to the instruction, position, and admonitions of the Lord. It’s an act of surrender and faith, trusting in the sovereignty and sufficiency of God, despite your circumstances, however difficult they may be.

Practically speaking, to fix your eyes on Jesus you must do three things.

  1. Read the Bible to learn about your water-walking Savior.
  2. Praise the Lord.
  3. Pray.

The Lord reveals Himself through His word, so the more time you spend in it, the better you know Him. And the deeper your knowledge of Christ, the stronger your faith in Him becomes. This leads to greater boldness, fruitfulness, and answered prayers. So if you want to fix your eyes on Jesus and not sink when the storms of life hit you, then you must be a woman of the word.

Memorizing and reciting scripture helps us to maintain a sober mind and a stellar focus on Christ.

Praising the Lord is another great way to raise your gaze off of yourself and your problems and onto Jesus, where it belongs. Part of the old hymn The Heavenly Vision (Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus) by Helen Lemmel, says:

Turn your eyes upon Jesus

Look full in His wonderful face

And the things of earth will grow strangely dim

In the light of his glory and grace

And of course, prayer is a must for every endeavor in life. Here is a simple prayer to help you fix your eyes on Jesus.

A Prayer to Fix Your Eyes on Jesus

Dear Heavenly Father, you are good and gracious, compassionate and kind, and I love you so much. You know the surrounding chaos, the circumstances I’m in, and the condition of my heart. Please help me to fix my eyes on Jesus. Clear out the clutter in my mind and enable me to focus on the words and ways of Jesus today. Thank you for your love, for your grace that enables me and your Spirit that empowers me. In the matchless and mighty name of Christ, my King, I pray. Amen.

Benefits of Fixing Your Eyes on Jesus

Hebrews 13:8 says that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. His character is unchanging. He always has been and always will be, your Rock and Redeemer, full of grace and truth.

He is the only constant in an ever-changing world. So when you fix your eyes on Jesus, you have spiritual stability even though your life may feel like it’s spinning out of control.

Fixing your eyes on Jesus also brings contentment, whereas looking at others or at the world will just make you dissatisfied. Satan will tempt you to look anywhere and everywhere other than to Jesus for satisfaction. But we find true freedom and fulfillment in Christ Alone. And Jesus is better than anyone and anything else!

Another benefit of being focused on the Lord is the strength to resist temptation. Satan will always tempt you to run to old habits for comfort, but time in prayer with your great High Priest gives you the ability to abstain from fleshly lusts.

Hebrews 4:15-16 KJV ~ For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

10 Bible Verses About Fixing Your Eyes on Jesus (KJV)

I use the King James Version, so the exact phrase “fix your eyes on Jesus” doesn’t appear in my Bible. But there are scriptures about looking to the Lord for help and hope in our times of need. Here are ten of those verses.

  • Hebrews 12:1-2 KJV ~ Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
  • Isaiah 45:22 KJV ~ Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.
  • Micah 7:7 KJV ~ Therefore I will look unto the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me.
  • Psalm 5:3 KJV ~ My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.
  • Isaiah 51:1 KJV ~ Hearken to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek the LORD: look unto the rock whence ye are hewn, and to the hole of the pit whence ye are digged.
  • Psalm 121:1  KJV ~ I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
  • Psalm 123:1 KJV ~ Unto thee lift I up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens.
  • Isaiah 40:25-26 KJV ~ To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth.
