11 Prayers for Unity in Your Marriage
While not written expressly for married couples, the book of Philippians contains essential elements of cohesive relationships that glorify God. With underlying themes of contentment, character development, and commitment to Christ, the book of Philippians is a great resource for Christian couples to obtain and maintain unity in their marriage.
Learning, believing, and applying God’s word is the key to transformation. Add to that praying the scriptures, and you are bound to see improvements in your relationship!
Here are 11 prayers for unity in your marriage, based on verses from the book of Philippians.
1. Remembering God’s faithfulness together brings unity to your marriage
Father God, you are so faithful. I know that you have started a good work in my spouse and a good work in our marriage. I trust you to continue to grow us and mold us into the image of Christ. Help me to be patient and walk by faith and not by sight, even when I don’t see progress. Remind me of your faithfulness and ability to make all things new when I grow weary and am tempted to give up on my spouse. In the mighty and matchless name of Christ, my King, I pray. Amen. (Philippians 1:6)
2. More love in your marriage fosters harmony
Father God, I pray our love would abound more and more in knowledge and in all judgment. That we would approve things that are excellent and be sincere and without offence until the day of Christ. That we would be filled with the fruits of righteousness for your glory. Keep us abiding in your love so we never have an empty love tank. Give us empathy and compassion for each other, and help us to see each other the way that you see us. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. (Philippians 1:9-11)
3. Being likeminded with Christ is the key to unity in marriage
Father God, I realize that we can never have true unity unless we are likeminded with Christ and each other. So often we view things differently. Remind us what you say on the matter is the final authority, and help us to submit to your word over how we feel and what we want. I pray we would stand fast in one spirit, with one mind, striving together for the faith of the gospel. Keep us from fighting against each other for our own agendas. Give us joy and unity to further the gospel for your glory. It’s in Christ’s name I pray. Amen. (Philippians 1:27)
4. Being like Jesus unifies relationships
Father God, I pray that my husband and I would each have the mind of Christ. That we would follow His example and be humble, obedient, servants who esteem the other better than ourselves. Help us to see each others needs and not be self-focused or self-serving. Remove pride from our hearts. Purify our motives so we do nothing for our own glory. Help us to be like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord and of one mind, so we can have unity in our marriage. In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen. (Philippians 2:2-5)
5. Have a good and godly testimony for unity in your marriage
Father God, I pray we would work out our own salvations with fear and trembling. That we would obey your word without complaining and be blameless and harmless in this wicked world. Help us to shine brightly and share the word of life boldly. May we be godly and have a good testimony so that our marriage can properly portray the image of the union between Christ and the Church. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. (Philippians 2:12-16)
6. Praying for help to forget the past and focus forward brings unity
Father God, I pray you would help us to forget the past and press on towards the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Heal our hurts, Lord. Remove bitterness and unforgiveness from our hearts. Get us on the same path, going in the same direction, with joy and unity in our marriage. In the precious name of Jesus I pray. Amen. (Philippians 3:13-14)

7. Stand fast in the Lord for unity in your marriage
Father God, I pray we would stand fast in you. That we wouldn’t cave under the pressures of life or get carried away with the temptations of Satan. Plant us in your love and truth, steadfast and strong in you, fighting against the wiles of the devil. I pray we would never give up or go astray into the arms of another. Make us a unified team and remind us daily that we are better together. In Jesus’ name. Amen. (Philippians 4:1-2)
8. Have a right-heart attitude if you want unity in your marriage
Father God, I pray that we would be joyful and thankful and not complainers. Help us to walk in the Spirit so we can be sober-minded and not ruled by our emotions. Help us to cast all our cares on you and not worry or take out our frustrations on each other. Remove our anxiety and fear and replace it with your perfect peace as we trust you to work all things out for our good and your glory. In Jesus’ name. Amen. (Philippians 4:4-6)
9. Be sober-minded if you want a peaceful and unified relationship
Father God, help us to keep your truth in the forefront of our minds. Remove any lies, imaginations, fantasies, or negativity. Give us pure and peaceful minds, so that we can have joy and unity in our marriage. Help us to live out the biblical principles we’ve been taught so that we aren’t hypocrites. In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen. (Philippians 4:8-9)
10. Contentment brings unification to marriage
Father God, help us to be content and not lusting after the things of this world. We can do all things through Christ, but we often forget that and worry and take matters into our own hands. Help us to live within our means and not take on debt or live in longing for things we don’t really need. Keep us continually satisfied with your perfect provision. In Jesus’ name. Amen. (Philippians 4:11-13)
11. Faith in God brings unity to marriage
Father God, help us to remember that you meet our every need. Keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and our hearts expectantly waiting for your provision. Rid us of doubt, worry, and fear, and give us strong faith and expectant hope in you. I pray you would get glory from our lives and our marriage, because you are worthy. In Jesus’ name. Amen. (Philippians 4:19-20)
