I remember the first time someone asked me to share my testimony. I was absolutely terrified at the thought of speaking in front of people and sharing the sinful secrets of my past. Stepping outside your comfort zone is difficult for anyone, but as an extremely insecure introvert, it was particularly challenging for me. But deep down I knew I had to do it. I found that there is power in sharing your personal testimony, and I’m so glad I took that brave step and did it.
If you want to share your testimony, and you’re fearful like I was, or you just don’t know where to start, then this post is for you!
What is Your Personal Testimony?
Psalm 107:2 KJV – Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy;
Your personal testimony is simply the story of how God is working in your life. There are several different aspects of your walk with Jesus that you could share. Some commonly shared Christian testimonies cover the following things:
Your personal testimony of salvation
Sharing your personal testimony of salvation includes who you were before Jesus, how you came to faith in Christ, and how He has changed your life. It is so powerful to hear about the amazing transformations that take place when people surrender to Jesus.
Salvation testimonies help to draw sinners to repentance. Someone could be saved by hearing how God forgave you and made you a new creature in Christ!
Your personal testimony of sanctification
Sanctification is the process by which God uses His word and His Spirit to convict, correct, and change us. It’s how God grows us in Christ-likeness. Sharing your personal testimony of sanctification might be your story of breaking free from habitual sin or growing in godliness.
For example, I once shared my experience with being convicted by the scriptures to submit to my husband, and how the Lord gave me grace and strength to obey His word.
It’s encouraging for people to know that we are all a work in progress!
Your personal testimony of faith
Some of my favorite testimonies are those that people tell of how God showed up in big ways in their lives. For instance, when someone has a fear of flying and no funds to travel, but God is clearly calling them to go on a mission trip, they take a step of faith and say yes to God, and it ends up completely amazing. That is an exciting story that inspires others to trust the Lord too!
Why is it Important to Share your Personal Testimony?
There are several reasons to share your personal testimony, besides the fact that the Lord said to. Sharing our stories does the following:
- Grows our faith in God and in His word
- Grows the faith of others
- Gives other believers the courage to share their stories
- Gives glory to God
- Keeps us accountable
- Reveals the power of God
- Dispels the darkness of the devil
When we speak out about the ways we were broken and in bondage to sin, and how Jesus delivered us from that misery, God is glorified and the devil is put in his place.
Satan wants us to keep silent about our struggles, but when we bring those things into the light we enable others to speak freely about their own issues.
Psalm 66:16 KJV – Come and hear, all ye that fear God, and I will declare what he hath done for my soul.
How to Prepare Your Personal Testimony to Share With Others
Being prepared takes some of the fear out of sharing your personal testimony. Whether you’re sharing your story of salvation, sanctification, or growing in faith, you should write it out and practice it before you go public with it.
I also recommend timing it so you can make adjustments to fit in your allotted time. You may also want to practice presenting it to your spouse, significant other, or friend for honest feedback.

Key elements of sharing your personal testimony
There are different ways to communicate your conversion story or tell about your walk with Jesus, but there are three things that are essential. Prayer, faith, and preparation are key elements of sharing your personal testimony.
Pray for the right words to speak, the hearts of the hearers, and for the discernment to give out only what God desires for people to hear. Have faith that God will give you the boldness and strength to be vulnerable. And put time into preparing what you are going to share.
Examples of Someone Sharing Their Personal Testimony
The apostle Paul’s conversion story is found in Acts 9:1-9, Acts 22:3-21, and Acts 26:4-23. I encourage you to read each of those accounts to get a feel for how to share your story of meeting Jesus.
I recently had the joy of hearing my teenage daughter give her testimony in front of our congregation. It was an emotional experience because she shared her battle with depression, rebellion against the Lord, and a suicide attempt, before coming to her senses and returning to Christ. As her mom, it was difficult to hear how she was suffering in silence and fighting against God for control of her life. It was hard and humbling for her to be so open about the mistakes she had made in the past. But she had several people tell her how much it encouraged them to hear how God changed her prodigal heart. And it made me praise the Lord once again for answering our fervent prayers and bringing her back to Him.
Another great testimony I heard lately is that of the Christian comedian John Crist. He shared about his sin struggles and the shame he felt from going to rehab. You can watch it on YouTube here.
Where Will You Share Your Personal Testimony?
Whether one-on-one or in a large group, there is power in sharing your personal testimony of how God has been at work in your life. It dispels the darkness of the devil and shines the light of God’s glorious grace!
People desperately need to hear about the hope that is found in Christ alone. There are so many lies out there. We hold the truth that makes people free, and we are accountable to God for speaking it. Let’s be good stewards of the good news and tell of the great things God has done for us!
1 Peter 3:15 KJV – But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
