What Does it Mean to Walk in the Light

In a world blanketed by darkness, there is no better time for Christians to walk in the light than now. When we shine with the light of Christ, sin is exposed, and darkness is expelled. Whether it’s spiritual blindness, emotional turmoil, or outright wickedness, walking in the light is the antidote.

It is said that “walking in the light” means to live life with God and that “walking in darkness” means living without Him. But, it’s not just lost sinners who walk in darkness. Even born-again believers, with the Holy Spirit within us, don’t always walk in the light. The choices we make determine the way we walk.

The Bible tells us to walk in the light, but what does that mean, and how do we walk in the light?

What Does it Mean to Walk in the Light?

To walk in the light is to live a life that is governed by the word of God and guided by the Spirit of God. Since God is Light (1 John 1:5), walking in the light is walking with God. It’s abiding in Christ and obeying the word.

When we walk in the light we experience joy and peace, as opposed to the anxiety and angst of the darkness. We shine with the love and light of Jesus that leads others to Him.

But walking in darkness is characterized by discouragement, depression, doubt, and discord. We avoid the light and withdraw into the wilderness of sin.

Matthew 5:16 KJV – Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Are you walking in darkness or walking in the light?

Sometimes, because of our rotten flesh, it’s hard to determine if we are truly walking in the light. We easily deceive ourselves. And sometimes we’re just blind to the ways darkness is creeping into our lives.

What invites darkness? Things that alter our thoughts, and pull us away from close fellowship with Jesus.

  • demonic influences through books, movies, tv shows, and podcasts. The devil, that subtle and sneaky snake, runs our world systems. He is the prince of the power of the air and uses the entertainment industry to make darkness readily available.
  • disobedience
  • drugs
  • delighting in sin

What brings light into our lives?

Things that renew our minds and cultivate intimacy in our relationships with Christ.

  • putting the Bible in our hearts
  • prayer
  • people who walk in the light
  • praise music

Walking in the light isn’t something that happens by accident. It takes intentional investment in your spiritual growth and stability.

We can walk in the light one day, and walk in darkness the next, if we aren’t rooted in His love, grounded in His truth, and growing in our knowledge of Him, intentionally, daily.

8 Bible Verses on “Walk in the Light” in the KJV

There are so many scriptures about walking in the light of the Lord. Here are eight of my favorites from the King James Version.

Isaiah 2:5 KJV – O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the LORD.

Psalm 56:13 KJV – For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?

Psalm 89:15 KJV – Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O LORD, in the light of thy countenance.

Isaiah 2:5 KJV – O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the LORD.

John 8:12 KJV – Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

Ephesians 5:8 KJV – For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:

1 John 1:7 KJV – But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

Revelation 21:24 KJV – And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.

Tips for Walking in the Light Today

Proverbs 4:26 KJV – Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.

Where are your feet taking you today? Further down the path of darkness or the path of light?

If you are shining bright and sharing the light of the Lord, then keep at it, Sister! But if you’re dealing with habitual sin, doubting your faith, depressed and discouraged, or disobeying the Lord in some way, please draw near to Christ.

Let the light of His glory and grace warm your face as you turn to Jesus. He is the Light of the world, and He loves you.

Abiding in Christ is the way to have an abundant life that thrives and attracts others to Jesus. If you want to walk in the light, fill up on the word of God, flee from sin and evil, and follow the leading of the Holy Spirit. Filter your thoughts and actions with the Bible, and obey the Lord. Refuse to let your flesh rule you, and walk in the Spirit.

A Prayer to Help You Walk in the Light

In closing, here is a prayer to help you walk in the light. May God bless you, keep you, and cause His face to shine upon you today!

Father of Light, I praise you for your goodness and grace. Your love is better than life and I am so thankful for it. I want my life to bring you glory, Lord, so I lift my heart to you. Remove any hindrances to our sweet fellowship, so I can walk in the light, as you are in the light. I love you, Lord, and ask for your help as the darkness encroaches me. Thank you for your word that brings wisdom and illuminates the path I should be on. Keep me in your perfect will, walking in the light of your glorious grace. I ask all these things in the precious and perfect name of Christ, my King, Amen.

Get a “My Jesus Journal” to Help You Walk in the Light

I created a tool to help Christian women to know Jesus more intimately, so they can walk in the light.

My Jesus Journal focuses your time in the word on learning more about the Lord and cultivating a closer relationship with Christ.

Intended to be used alongside your daily Bible reading, My Jesus Journal has space to record the date, the scriptures you read, and lined spaces to write your observations about Jesus you saw in the text. The bottom of that page has a verse from the KJV Bible about Jesus. The following page has space to write prayers related to what you discovered in your reading. There are also extra prayer pages in the back of the book.

Mark 12:30 tells us to love the Lord with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength, but we cannot love someone we do not know. The more time we spend intentionally seeking Jesus in the pages of scripture, the more we will know Him and love Him. My Jesus Journal aids us in our quest to learn and love and know Jesus more deeply.

Beautiful, portable, and affordable!

If you are looking for help to grow in your knowledge of Jesus, build intimacy in your relationship with Him, and deepen your love for the Lord, then My Jesus Journal is just what you need!

Beautifully designed with your spiritual growth in mind, I perfectly sized My Jesus Journal to fit into your purse, backpack, or diaper bag. You can grow on the go when you use wait times in the Doctor’s office, the carpool line, etc. for Bible study.

My Jesus Journal is extremely affordable, so you can purchase just one for yourself, or consider buying one for your entire ministry, to begin a season of seeking Jesus together. It makes an excellent gift for any Christian woman in your life!
