One of the main things that keeps believers from fulfilling the ministry God has given them is insecurity. When we lack confidence in our abilities or let the fear of failure overwhelm us, we won’t make forward progress and pursue our purpose.
To accomplish the mission of God, we must remember who we are in Christ and refute the lies of the devil. Understanding our identity in Christ is the key to overcoming our insecurities and doing what God has called us to do.
What is our identity in Christ? The book of Ephesians gives us truths about who we are in Him.
What is Our Identity in Christ?
At the moment of salvation, God transforms us from sinners to saints. We become new creatures with a new purpose, followers of Jesus, disciples, and children of God by faith in Christ. Whereas our sin once separated from God, we are now in unity with the Divine.
Instead of characterizing ourselves by our titles or our works, God wants us to realize that at our core, we are His image-bearers.
Even though we still give in to the lusts of the flesh and fall for the devil’s devices and get put in boxes and labeled by the world, believers are brand new, born again, and blessed beyond measure.
You are who God says you are.
Not who you used to be.
Or who the world says you are.
And not who the devil accuses you of being.
Your identity in Christ is that of an accepted and dearly loved child.
Bible Verses About Our Identity in Christ from the Book of Ephesians
The letter from the apostle Paul to the church at Ephesus contains vital descriptions of the Christian’s new status in God’s eyes. If you struggle with insecurity and feelings of inadequacy, reading and studying the book of Ephesians will renew your mind so that you can confidently pursue your God-given destiny.
Here’s what God says about who you are in Christ.
Our identity in Christ from Ephesians Chapter 1
As believers, we are:
- BLESSED – Ephesians 1:3 KJV – Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:
- CHOSEN, HOLY, AND BLAMELESS – Ephesians 1:4 KJV – According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
- PREDESTINATED, AND ADOPTED – Ephesians 1:5 KJV – Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
- ACCEPTED IN THE BELOVED – Ephesians 1:6 KJV – To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.
- REDEEMED AND FORGIVEN – Ephesians 1:7 KJV – In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
- SEALED – Ephesians 1:13 KJV – In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
Our identity in Christ from Ephesians Chapter 2
- QUICKENED (Made alive) – Ephesians 2:1 KJV – And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
- MADE NEW – Ephesians 2:3 KJV – Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
- LOVED – Ephesians 2:4 KJV – But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
- SEATED IN HEAVENLY PLACES – Ephesians 2:6 KJV – And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
- ABLE TO APPROACH GOD – Ephesians 2:18 KJV – For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.
- FELLOWCITIZENS WITH THE SAINTS AND PART OF THE HOUSEHOLD OF GOD – Ephesians 2:19 KJV – Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
- A HOME FOR THE SPIRIT – Ephesians 2:22 KJV – In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.
Our identity in Christ from Ephesians Chapter 3
- BOLD AND CONFIDENT – Ephesians 3:12 KJV – In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.
- LOVED – Ephesians 3:19 KJV – And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
Our identity in Christ from Ephesians Chapter 4
- INDWELT BY GOD – Ephesians 4:6 KJV – One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
Scripture says that in Christ we are accepted, adopted, alive, and adored by the creator and sustainer of all things. We are redeemed and remade into temples of His Spirit. Because of our relationship with Jesus, we are no longer slaves to fear, our feelings, the flesh, or our Foe.
We are free. God has equipped us and empowered us to do every single thing He calls us to do.
So let’s not focus on ourselves or our shortcomings, like Moses did when God told him to go and lead the Israelites out of Egypt. Let’s believe who God says we are and trust Him to use us for His glory.
